Shirley K. Davenport was born on August 27, 1937, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Camille Kennedy McClellan and Walter Kennedy. Our beloved Shirley departed this life on September 5, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and cherished memories.
She was a faithful member of Rogers Memorial Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN since her youth. She served on several committees and auxiliaries within the church with pleasure and enthusiasm.
Shirley was united in holy matrimony to James Walter Davenport Sr., and together they celebrated over 65 beautiful years of love and friendship. From this union, they were blessed with two children: Cammie Davenport Woodle and James Walter Davenport, Jr. Shirley was a proud and devoted grandmother to three grandchildren: Stephanie J. Woodle, Kyonna J. Davenport, and Sydney D. Woodle. She also had a deep affection for her great-grandson, Jayceon Green. She leaves a host of other very close family & friends to cherish her memory.
After graduating from Knoxville College, Shirley pursued her passion for education. Her love for teaching shined brightly throughout her life, as she dedicated 32 years to shaping and inspiring her students. She made a lasting impact while teaching at Green McAdoo School and West Haven Elementary School, influencing generations of students.
In 2015, the Clinton Twelve (former Green McAdoo students) honored her at their 50th Year Class Reunion and presented her with a Commemorative Quilt.
Shirley became a member of the esteemed Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated as a student at Knoxville College being initiated into the Gamma Eta Chapter. She continued to serve in her local Graduate Chapter, Alpha Pi Omega, serving in many leadership roles such as President, Southeastern Regional Chair and Recording Secretary throughout years. She reached the prestigious ranks of Silver, Gold, and Pearl milestones for her over 65 years, reflecting her dedication to service and sisterhood.
She was also very active with the Knoxville Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., serving in various capacities to include President and Chair of one of their annual Beautillions. The Beautillion was one of her favorite activities along with the various Top Teens’ projects.
Shirley had a passion for the wellbeing of all people. She was an avid Philanthropist and sat on multiple boards and committees throughout the Knoxville area. She took her love for reading to new heights by being a Charter Member and former President of the Friendly Readers’ Book Club. The book club celebrated its 25th Anniversary in grand style in December 2023.
In her free time, Shirley enjoyed playing bridge, participating in her book club, collecting Mickey Mouse items, and spending quality time with her family and close friends. She also had a sweet tooth for honey buns, her favorite snack.
Her legacy of love, learning, and service will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Family will receive friends Saturday September 14, 2024 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Rogers Memorial Baptist Church, 520 College St, Knoxville, TN 37921 — funeral services to follow. Rev. A.D. Baxter is officiating.
Interment at Berry Highland South, 9010 E Simpson Rd, Knoxville, TN 37920.
