Dr. Larissa Henderson

On June 28, 2026, Dr. Larrissa D. Henderson peacefully transitioned at her home from labor to reward, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all those who loved her. While our hearts are saddened by this earthly farewell, we find comfort in reflecting on a life filled with love, faith, purpose, and cherished memories.

Larrissa Diana Henderson was born on September 28, 1951, in Knoxville, TN to Harry Sr., and Clara Mae Harris.  From an early age, she demonstrated perseverance on education that would leave a lasting impact on family, friends, and the community.

She was a dependable devoted member at First Baptist Roseberry City Church where she faithfully attended since childhood until recently when her health began to decline.  She served in several positions such as Church Clerk & Church Treasurer, Superintendent of Sunday School, and President of the Mother’s Board.  She also frequently assisted with the Hospitality Committee.  Her unwavering faith, strong character, and loving heart became a source of inspiration to many.

Larrissa was an accomplished educational leader with extensive experience in K-12 pupil services, complimented by advanced academic credentials which include EDs (Education Specialty Degree) and a paralegal Associate of Arts Degree.  She holds a Doctor of Education Degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and a Master’s and Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, she demonstrated a deep understanding of educational theory and practice to her work.  Her career was dedicated to supporting student welfare and ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities within school districts.

In her role as Director of Pupil Services at Oak Ridge Schools, Dr. Henderson oversaw a comprehensive range of critical student support functions.  Her responsibilities encompassed the implementation of policies and programs related to attendance, discipline, truancy, and student conduct.  She managed health services, addressed residency and custody matters, and ensured compliance with school entry requirements. Larrissa also played a key role in coordinating homebound instruction, homeschooling, and tuition applications, demonstrating a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of all students.  Her work involved complex issues such as guardianship, cross-boundary requests, and disciplinary hearings, all aimed at fostering a supportive and effective learning environment.

Prior to her leadership role, Larrissa served as a Teacher in Knox County Schools for many years which include Farragut Elementary, then served as Principal at Maynard Elementary (Knox Co.), Westview Elementary (Knox. Co.), and Woodland Elementary in Oak Ridge (Anderson Co.).  During this time, she contributed to curriculum development and program implementation, including assisting with the Accelerated Math Program.  She also took on leadership responsibilities as a science chair and served as a state evaluator for Future Problem Solving which showcased her engagement in educational innovation and student enrichment activities.  Her dedication to fostering student achievement was evident in her work with young learners, including guiding a team to an international competition. Her contributions have consistently focused on enhancing student support systems and promoting positive educational outcomes within the Oak Ridge and Knoxville area.

Soror Larrissa Henderson has been a devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since 2003. Throughout her years of service, she has faithfully exemplified the very best of our sisterhood through her steadfast leadership, unwavering loyalty, and selfless dedication. Within Xi Iota Omega Chapter, she has served with distinction as President (three terms), Vice-President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Archive’s Chair, Membership Committee, and Program Chair, and regionally, as Program Chair. She was also a Board Member and the Treasurer for the Cultured Pearls of the Secret City, which is the fundraising arm of Xi Iota Omega Chapter. She has not only served, but she has inspired; not only led, but lifted others along the way.

Known for her warm spirit and joyful presence, Soror Larrissa brought light to every gathering. She enjoyed traveling to Clusters, Regional Conferences, and Boules, and if the destination was less than ten hours away, she was always willing to drive because she truly loved being on the road. She also enjoyed line dancing and was affectionately considered the Dancing Queen of our Chapter, bringing energy, laughter, and delight wherever she went. Her fellowship, dedication, and vibrant spirit have left lasting memories that will continue to be treasured throughout the sisterhood.

Soror Larrissa’s commitment to mentorship has helped strengthen the bonds of sisterhood, and her strong faith has been a guiding light in both word and deed. Whenever she was asked to serve, she never turned it down, always answering the call with a willing heart and an unshakable spirit of dedication. Her dedication reminds us that true leadership is rooted in love, humility, and consistency. Because of her commitment to this sisterhood, our Sorority is stronger, our purpose is clearer, and our legacy is richer. Soror Larrissa Diana Henderson, we honor you, we celebrate you, and we thank you for your enduring dedication and faithful service to our beloved Sorority.

She leaves to cherish her memory: Daughter: Latoya Ward, Son: Jerome Henderson, Jr., Granddaughter: Jael (Ahmir) Ward-Lee; Siblings: Harriett Harris, Harry Harris, Jr., Vannissa Walton, Eric Harris; Nephews: Aramahs, Kenneth, Jr., Brandon, Forrest, Amiricle, Elijah, Isaiah; Nieces: Shamara, Essence, Tia, Kyla; Great Nieces & Nephews: Braydon, Autumn, Egypt, Emeri, Imani, Alexis, Ashja, Indae’, Malik; Great-Great Neice: GiAnni and a host of the extended Henderson family & friends to include the AKA Sorority Sisters.

Public viewing will begin Friday, July 10, 2026 at 10 am at Jarnigan & Son Mortuary, 2823 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Knoxville, TN 37914. A private sorority service will be held Friday July 10, 2026 from 5 to 5:30 at Jarnigan & Son Mortuary, 2823 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue Knoxville, TN 37914. 

Family will receive friends SATURDAY July 11, 2026 from 10 to 11am at New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1933 Texas Avenue Knoxville, TN 37921, with funeral services to follow. Rev. Joseph B Smith Jr. Pastor. Rev. Cedrick Jackson Officiating. Interment at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, 1501 Bethel Valley Rd, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
