Dozier Earl Armstrong, Jr, age 85, of Powell Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Dozier Earl Armstrong Jr. was born on May 1st, 1940 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Dozier Earl Armstrong Sr. and Nell B. Armstrong.Â
Earl graduated from Chattanooga Howard High School and later joined the US Navy. Upon finishing his service, he enrolled in Knoxville College. A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha, where he graduated with a BS degree in Education. He served as vice principal at Austin East High School before continuing to work devotedly as an 8th grade middle school teacher at Gresham Middle School in Knoxville. While there he lovingly coached the Gresham Middle School basketball team for a number of years. He stayed at Gresham for nearly 30 years before his retirement. He married Jymme Sue Walton and were blessedly married for over 58 glorious years. He was a proud and devoted family man, always known to be there for his family and friends. Earl was a passionate golfer, car aficionado, and devoted member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church where he served was a deacon, elder, and treasurer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dozier Earl Armstrong, Sr and Nell B. Armstrong Thomas; stepfather, Ralph Thomas, and son, Michael Boseman.
He leaves to cherish his memories, wife of 58 years, Jymme Sue Armstrong of Powell; daughters, Kimberly Nell Armstrong and Erica J. Armstrong; sons, Marcus (Terri) Armstrong and Danny (Debbie) Shields; special daughter Marcella Rodgers; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren to include grandchildren, Jimmy O. Young and Emerald Armstrong; and a host of other relatives to include cousin, Natalie "Paddy Cake" McClarty.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 26th, 2026 from 11am to 12pm at Shiloh Presbyterian Church, 904 Biddle St, Knoxville, TN 37914, with funeral services to follow. Rev. John Ghosten officiating. Interment at 2pm at East Tennessee State Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Presbyterian Church.Â
