Valorie Marie McCanelley

Valorie Marie McCanelley of Knoxville Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home September 28, 2023. Valorie was employed at Children’s Hospital and retired after 30 years of service. She touched many lives and had a strong love for everyone she met.


Graduated from Fulton high school class of 1972, attended ESTU and graduated from Tusculum Presbyterian College in Greeneville, Tennessee.

She was employed at Children’s Hospital for 30 years and never met a stranger, always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she came in contact with.

She was raised as a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, and was a member of fourth United Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the church choir, an elder, and a strong participant of Sunday school class taught by Dr. Evelyn Hallmen.


Valorie was especially known for her love of music, dancing, singing, playing bid whiz and spades with her numerous friends. She, Lorraine Smith, Ann Taylor, and David Turk were known for their annual February birthday parties. Their friends and relatives came from near and far. Although mother’s birthday was August 29, she celebrated as if it were her birthday and dressed for the occasion.

Valorie was a generous giver and was known for her gift of listening. All know her love of the telephone where she welcomed calls at any time. Valorie made it a point to check on everyone.


She was preceded in death by parents, Frederick McCanelley abe Ella Mae (Bunnie)l Smith McCanelley; great aunts, Nellie B. Jones and Anita Green; aunts, Shirley Smith, Nancy, S. Wright, Maxine Smith, Alford.


She leaves to cherish her memory siblings, Adondra, McCanelley Murphy; brother-in-law; (Leon), Frederick (Chip) Jr., Lydia, Freda McCAnelley, William Johnson, and Kimberly Jones; uncles, Carl McCanelley (Ida Bea) Cleveland, Ohio, Allen Theodore Kincaid, Knoxville, Tennessee; cousins, Shirley Wright -(George) Davis, Gretchen, Wright Washington, DC, Helen, Carla, Alford, Jason Wilson, and RJ Boyd of Philadelphia, PA., Omega Beckham- (Michael) Clark, Knoxville, Tennessee, Rodney McCanelley Albany, Georgia, Natalie McCanelley-Boddie Lancaster, California, Ingrid McCanelley-Rogers Akron, Ohio; cousins, the Duncan family Cleveland, Ohio, McCanelley’s, Joshlyn McCanelley-Hundley (Dwight) and Kincaid family of Knoxville , Tennessee; devoted friends, Cynthia, Daniel, Karen Valentine, Ann Taylor, Sherry, Taylor, Kirk and Dolly Griffin, Fuzzy and Mickey Moore; College roommate, Angela White-Wilson (Karl) (neighbor ). Family will receive friends, 5:30-6:00 p.m., Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Shiloh Presbyterian Church; Memorial Service, 6:00 p.m., Rev. John Ghosten, Officiating.
