Mattie Gerome Sharp age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at her residence. Born in Moulton, Alabama, Mattie was the daughter of the late Lonzo and Viola Gibson.
Mattie was a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, serving as president of the Solid Rock of Wisdom, Senior Ministry, and head of the Kitchen Committee. She served for many years as a poll worker with the Knox County Election Commission. She was formerly employed with Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) for more than 20 years. Prior to employment at KAT she was a nurse at the UT Medical Center, Parkwest Hospital, and in Home Health Care. For more than 30 years, Mattie was a devoted member of the Amarse-Della Love Allen Temple #810 Elks, holding both State and Grand honors and formerly served on the James R. Reynolds Military Police Unit #1152. Mattie volunteered in many areas of the community including the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. As well as her community service, she was well known for her love of cooking, baking, and traveling.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister, Dorothy Lee; brother in-law Julius Lee; sister in-law, Evelyn Coats, and grandson, Kelton Crawford.
She is survived by son, Von Gibson, Ellenwood, GA; brothers, Danny Coats and Gaylord (Truly) Gibson, Knoxville, TN; granddaughter, April Hawkins, Knoxville, TN; grandsons, Javon (LaFrancis) Gibson, Marietta, GA and Tylon (Jaleesa) Gibson, Knoxville, TN. She is also survived by her much-loved, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members, devoted friends, and the Tarleton Avenue Community.
Saturday, May 11, 2024, the family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, 2137 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, followed by a Celebration of Life, Pastor Vincent M. Jones Jr., Officiant.
