Evelyn Gail Winton


Evelyn Gail Winton, 87, of Knoxville, Tennessee devoted mother, loving grandmother, sister, cousin and friend passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Evelyn was born in Greenville South Carolina to the late Eva Mae Patterson (Liddell) and the late William Icem.


Evelyn was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 6, 1936. Evelyn was a graduate of Austin High School and was employed by Standard Knitting Mill as a seamstress for 26 years, then was employed at RT Ross Center as a secretary until she retired in 1997.


Gail or grand momma Gail knew how to make you laugh with her infectious sense of humor; especially if you were celebrating a birthday OR if it was HER birthday. SOMEBODY WAS GOING TO SING THE “HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONG” word for word. We will miss her sense of humor immensely.

Preceding Gail in death and greeting her in Heaven: Her mother, Eva Mae Patterson, daughter, Evelyn Icem, daughter, Tangela Winton and her brother, Billy Icem, niece Vershann Wright, great great granddaughter Aliyah Boyd, Keyron Prentice Jr.


Gail leaves to cherish her memory a devoted son Leonard (Sharon) Winton III, loving daughter, Linda Prentice, and loving Sister, Laverne Johnson devoted granddaughter, Traonna (Robert) Smith, devoted granddaughter Tiffany (Dexter) Davidson, Kenneth (Rena) Glass, Natalia Prentice, Keyron Prentice, Harmando Icem, Step grandsons: Sanford Miller Jr. and Larry Hurston; 23 great grandchildren, 8 great great grand children and a very devoted friend Jean Delaney along with a host of family and friends too numerous to name.


The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. at Jarnigan & Son Mortuary located at 2823 Martin L. King Jr. Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37914 with the funeral service to follow. Officiating the service will be Pastor Jean Delaney.


Family will meet at 2211 Brice Street, 37917. March 10, 2024, at 1:15 p.m. for procession to Jarnigan & Son Mortuary. Please contact Sharon Winton at 865-805-9321 regarding any additional questions pertaining to the family.
