Charles Wadley III, age 86, Knoxville, went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, September 14, 2023. He was a devoted member of Payne Avenue Missionary Baptist Church until his health began to decline.
Charles, a Deacon Emeritus, enjoyed helping others. He presided over the transportation ministry, assisted church members with their doctor’s appointments, visited the sick, took seniors on special outings and worked on the hospitality committee with his wife, family and friends. Charles was an avid gardener. He was one of the first black members of the Teamsters Union, retiring from Yellow Freight. Devoted husband, father, and brother, Charles never met a stranger and was loved by all who met him.
Preceded in death by parents: Charles Wadley II and Sarah Peebles; wife, Freddie Ann; sister, Esther Peebles and brother, William.
Survived by devoted daughters: Lisa Wagoner and Cheri Wadley; loving and devoted grandsons: Frederick Wagoner, Alexis Johnson, and Devin McGuire; great granddaughter, Jamarrionna; devoted sisters, Antionette Garrett and Zonia Peebles; brother, Charles Edward; incredibly special aunt, Marion Dorsey, numerous cousins, and special caregiver, Marilyn Hereford; special friends, Dewayne Siddell and Hilton Tate.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at NHC Nursing Home, Emerald Avenue, especially those who watched over Charles and made sure his needs were met in our absence; they include Emma, Amirria, Tamara and Natalie. A special thanks to University of Tennessee Hospice Nurse Dee Rice.
Family will receive friends at Payne Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, 2714 Martin Luther King Avenue, Friday, September 22, 2023, 11:00 am – 12:00 noon, funeral services 12:00 noon, Richard Brown, Officiant. Entombment, Highland Memorial Cemetery, Sutherland Avenue.
